Sketch book studies with Stacey McCall, 11th March 2025
11th March 2025, 8-9.15pm GMT
Join Stacey as she demonstrates her use of the sketchbook in her art practice. Stacey will give the class a tour of her own sketchbooks as well as highlighting other artists that influence her work. Beginning with a still life set up, Stacey will show how she loosely draws in her composition, making marks that endeavour to capture the essence of the objects rather than a realistic rendering. She will then work up these drawings using a combination of water colour, gouache and acrylic paint, building up layers of translucent colour using a limited palette. Stacey will also show how her sketchbook studies are then used to inform her oil paintings.
“Everything starts in my sketchbooks, whether quick little drawings in pencil or more resolved studies in gouache, acrylic and water colour. It is where I capture the essence of the vignettes I paint or even the landscape when I occasionally paint plein air. My advice to any artist who isn’t sure where to start, is always, start in your sketchbook. Carry one with you, take notes, make marks, get the creative juices flowing”.
